On that day, 9th February 2007, I was out with a friend for her Birthday. We walked into a pub and Simon was there, eating pizza at the end of the bar. I can still picture him when he offered me a slice and we immediately hit it off. I didn’t think we would end up together and eventually get married. Why would I?
I had just broken up with my boyfriend and wasn’t looking for anyone new. I wrestled with my attraction to Simon, with guilt about it being too soon. In the end, I couldn’t ignore the strong pull I had to him, something connecting us. It was as though we had met before, in another time, in another life.
We soon discovered our paths had crossed many times. We went to the same alternative pubs, nightclubs and student union fifteen years prior. Simon travelled around France at the same time I was working there. Yes, I know France is a big place but he visited the same small town where I lived. In one of our many ‘getting to know you’ conversations, we found out we both liked the theatre and went to the same plays.
On that Day, my life changed forever. A beautiful, caring and honest person came into my life. We could have met earlier but fate decided it was going to be this day. I’m forever grateful, as even though my heart is now broken, to have never walked into the pub on that day would have been far worse.
